Solyndra Scandal Becoming Killer Bunny For Democrats

When Solyndra questions come up in interviews, Democrats run away:
Via BreitbartTV: OMB Director Runs From Questions On Solyndra
Wash Times: Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget Jack Lew refused to answer questions about Solyndra on Tuesday when he was asked by the Washington Times' affiliated radio show, America's Morning News, if he let Energy Secretary Steven Chu know that there were concerns from OMB about loaning more tax payer money to the now defunct solar panel maker company Solyndra.
Other Solyndra updates via Instapundit:
MEGAN MCARDLE: Solyndra Was Just a Bad Bet From the Beginning. Do tell.
And this:
L.A. Times: Obama advisors raised warning flags before Solyndra bankruptcy. “Long before the politically connected California solar firm Solyndra went bankrupt, President Obama was warned by his top economic advisors about the financial and political risks of the Energy Department loan guarantee program that boosted the company’s rapid ascent.”

Solyndra's creditor: California Democratic Party!

The money laundering operation continues. Democrats vote money to unions that tithe back to the Democratic Party that use that taxpayer money for political campaigning and crony capitalism. This is a story of the latter, via memeorandum: California Democratic Party among Solyndra's creditors
Out of the hundreds of out-of-work employees, vendors, investors and other creditors in the bankruptcy of government-backed solar-panel maker Solyndra LLC, one name stands out: the California Democratic Party.

Why California Democrats would be creditor to a company that received more than a half-billion dollars in federal loans to build a solar-panel plant isn’t clear. Even party officials say they’re not sure.
What do they mean they're 'not sure?' And then more laundering:
According to campaign-finance records, Solyndra donated $7,500 to the California Democratic Party in October 2010. It’s legal in California for corporations to make donations. But that doesn’t explain why the company would identify the Democratic Party as a creditor in its bankruptcy filing a year later.
Perhaps they can ask the Solyndra execs. Then again, they would only get one answer: Video: Solyndra Execs Take The Fifth
More from The Heritage Foundation and Sweetness & Light. More Solyndra news: So, Who's Heard of Scandal-Engulfed Solyndra?
MRCTV decided to conduct an experiment in Washington, D.C. and ask people on the street if they've heard about (what should be) a pretty big deal: Solyndra. We were also curious which news outlets they frequented to get a gist of how informed they were on the issue. Of the few people that have heard about it -except for one- Fox News informed them. The other person says he heard about it on The Colbert Report. Some people even thought it was medication, which is a good guess.
And via Instapundit:
SOLARGATE UPDATE: Waxman Says Energy and Commerce Dems Would Support GOP Subpoena of Solyndra Execs. “But Waxman drew a bright line between a potential subpoena of the company and a July edict that Republicans issued to the Office of Management and Budget for emails related to its review of the Solyndra loan guarantee.” Executives must testify, White House to keep silent? Hmm.

Watering The Plants: Retired Google Millionaire That Told Obama: "Would You Please Raise My Taxes!" Is Democratic Party Donor

The big fail in this is that the guy was later outed as a plant:
From Michele Malkin: Latest Obama stage prop: Retired mega-Dem donor/former Google asks prez to raise his taxes
At a LinkedIn town hall/campaign rally forum with President Obama today, a questioner picked “randomly” from the audience just happened to beg the president to raise his taxes...

The questioner is one Doug Edwards, an early Google employee who is retired and who has given gobs and gobs of cash to the Democratic party via Tim Carney:
It seems relevant to point out that this rich liberal is Doug Edwards from the Obama-friendly and regulation-friendly Google.

Edwards has given $300,000 to politicians since 2000 — every single dime to Democrats. He specifically said he wanted his higher taxes to cover Pell Grants.
Every. Single. Dime.

Video of Grassley: Heads Should Roll Over $16 Muffins

You may or may not have noticed that the ruling class throws around our money like wedding attendees throw rice. Case in point: Injustice Department Flings Our Money to the Four Winds
They've spared no expense
...the leftist ideologues running the rogue Justice Department — who help drug cartels smuggle weapons and will not investigate civil rights abuses if the victims are Caucasians — pay $16 apiece for muffins to munch on while they sit around conference tables bloviating uselessly.
[An Inspector General audit released Tuesday] found that DOJ employees attended or participated in 1,832 conferences with a total cost of $121 million in fiscal years 2008 and 2009. The Inspector General analyzed 10 specific conferences which cost $4.4 million.

The report revealed, “one conference served $16 muffins while another served Beef Wellington hors d’oeuvres that cost $7.32 per serving. Coffee and tea at the events cost between $0.62 and $1.03 an ounce. At the $1.03 per-ounce price, an 8-ounce cup of coffee would have cost $8.24.”
...This from the same government that has been leaning on restaurants to serve us less tasty food for the sake of our body mass indexes.
Ironic, no? Scaling back is for the little people. Grassley's comment is a good one as long as it's Holder's: Heads Should Roll Over $16 Muffins

City of San Juan Capistrano, CA Fines Christians $300 For Holding Bible Study In Their Home

You read that right. From WND via Gateway Pundit:
Chuck and Stephanie Fromm already have been fined $300 for holding Bible studies for their friends at their home, and they face the potential for additional fines of $500 for each study held, according to a legal team taking their case to court.

The newest conflict over Bible studies in homes in America arose in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., where city officials say city code section 9-3.301 prohibits religious organizations in residential neighborhoods without a conditional-use permit, a sometimes very expensive procedure.

The code cites “churches, temples, synagogues, monasteries, religious retreats, and other places of religious worship and other fraternal and community service organizations.”

But a Bible study in a home?
This goes back to a post of mine from 2009: California Pastor Threatened With Fines For Holding Bible Study In Own Home! Might even be the same couple from the sounds of it.
A San Diego pastor and his wife claim they were interrogated by a county official and warned they will face escalating fines if they continue to hold Bible studies in their home.

The couple, whose names are being withheld until a demand letter can be filed on their behalf, told their attorney a county government employee knocked on their door on Good Friday, asking a litany of questions about their Tuesday night Bible studies, which are attended by approximately 15 people.

"Do you have a regular weekly meeting in your home? Do you sing? Do you say 'amen'?" the official reportedly asked. "Do you say, 'Praise the Lord'?"

The pastor's wife answered yes.

She says she was then told, however, that she must stop holding "religious assemblies" until she and her husband obtain a Major Use Permit from the county, a permit that often involves traffic and environmental studies, compliance with parking and sidewalk regulations and costs that top tens of thousands of dollars.

And if they fail to pay for the MUP, the county official reportedly warned, the couple will be charged escalating fines beginning at $100, then $200, $500, $1000, "and then it will get ugly."
You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me. Uh - how is this constitutional in the slightest? The first Amendment Of The Constitution states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
What part of not prohibiting the free exercise thereof do these people not get? This is exactly the nanny-state absurdity that liberal ideology is attempting to foist on us all, through legislative fiat if possible, judicial fiat if necessary. Fortunately, the couple now has an attorney, Dean Broyles of the Western Center for Law & Policy, and is not taking this lying down:
Broyles confirmed the county official followed through on his threat. The pastor and his wife received a written warning ordering the couple to "cease/stop religious assembly on parcel or obtain a major use permit."

Broyles also explained to WND that oppressive governments, such as communist China or Nazi Germany, worked to repress home fellowships, labeling them the "underground church" or "subversive groups," legally compelling Christians to meet only in sanctioned, government-controlled "official" churches.
I'm trying to give the benefit of a doubt here and say that this official is just some fringe kook that will at some point be rebuffed by his or her superior and hopefully fired, never to work in the public sector again fro such blatant stupidity. Unfortunately, it is far more likely that more of this is coming down the pike, uprooting the very principles the founding fathers put in place for a good reason. WND is pretty good at following up on such stories. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a quick resolution...

Finally! Solyndra Scandal Hitting Main Stream News Outlets

What took them? After the FBI has raided Solyndra and the homes of its executives. After the US House opened up hearings on how half a BILLION dollars was thrown down the toilet. It's Obama's Enron. And finally, finally! the establishment MSM is starting to report on the scandal:
After swirling around talk radio, blogs and the internet for the past two weeks, the growing Solyndra scandal is making its way to main stream news outlets like this report from the Associated Press. With the exception of the excellent investigative work by Brian Ross at ABC News, most television news bureaus have given modest attention to the story that seems to get bigger every day.
The latest on the scandal via Instapundit:

AP: Obama admin reworked Solyndra loan to favor donor. “The Obama administration restructured a half-billion dollar federal loan to a troubled solar energy company in such a way that private investors — including a fundraiser for President Barack Obama — moved ahead of taxpayers for repayment in case of a default, government records show.”
And this:

LIGHTSQUARED: ANOTHER SOLYNDRA? “A pattern of providing White House support to favored companies — at taxpayer risk — is emerging.”
Plus here:

SOLYNDRA IS NOT THE ONLY SUBSIDIZED GREEN FAILURE: “Solyndra, the solar panel company whose highly publicized failure and consequent investigation by federal authorities has flashed across headlines recently, isn’t the only business to go belly up after benefiting from a piece of the $800 billion economic stimulus package passed in 2009. At least four other companies have received stimulus funding only to later file for bankruptcy, and two of those were working on alternative energy.”
And here:

ER, BECAUSE IT WAS A SCAM? Why Solyndra Wasn’t Good Stimulus. I mean, just for a start . . . .
Insty's up on it so you can be.

UPDATE: One more:
SOLARGATE UPDATE: Chicago Tribune Editorial: The Solyndra saga: Obama administration put taxpayers on hook for failed venture. “There are a lot of questions around this deal. At least one investor in it was a prominent Obama fundraiser. Some Democrats say Solyndra executives may have misled them. If the federal government can’t responsibly manage the money it’s doling out in the name of economic stimulus, then it has no business doling out the money — period. At a minimum, this episode illustrates the perils of sinking taxpayer dollars into risky private ventures.”
At a minimum. Plus this: “A nickel’s worth of business sense and a dime’s worth of caution might have saved Uncle Sam millions — and the Obama administration a heap of trouble.” Where are you going to find a nickel’s worth of business sense in an administration where there’s no private-sector experience? And caution is for lesser mortals, not The One and his chosen crew.

Video: Obama Can't Be Bothered To Look Into Solyndra Scandal

Updating these prior posts on Obama's crony capitalism:
The FBI has raided Solyndra and the homes of its executives. The US House has opened up hearings on how half a BILLION dollars was thrown down the toilet. It's Obama's Enron. Well, it would be if the media reported on it like it should. Heck - liberals are literally plugging their ears: Bob Beckel Refuses To Discuss Solyndra Scandal
Obama's Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked about the scandal. His response? Nothing to see here, folks. Just move along:
UPDATE: White House: We Haven't Looked Into Every Meeting
When asked about the scrutiny surrounding the meetings of a major Solyndra investor - who is in front of the line of taxpayers to claim assets from Solyndra - with top White House Staffers, Obama White House says: "We haven't looked into every meeting that he might have had here."
UPDATE #2: ‘Enron II’: Solyndra Scandal Threatens To Engulf White House
ABC News' Investigative Reporter Brian Ross was interviewed by Bill O'Reilly about the emerging Solyndra bankruptcy scandal. Ross claims that the scandal goes 'right through to the door of the White House' with White House officials being 'pressured' to move up the timing of the loan despite pushback from budget analysts.
UPDATE #3: Obama DOE Falsley Blames Bush For Solyndra
During congressional hearings about the growing Solyndra scandal, Johnathon Silver claimed the Obama Administration was merely following policies put in place by the Bush Administration. However, what he failed to tell the congressional committee was that prior to Obama taking office, the Bush Administration put a freeze on plans to loan money to Solyndra due to worries over the company's viability. Two weeks into the Obama Administration, the loan was "fast-tracked".

SOLARGATE UPDATE: Obama Officials Sat In On Solyndra Meetings. “Officials from the Department of Energy have for months been sitting in on board meetings as ‘observers’ at Solyndra, getting an up-close view as the solar energy company careened towards bankruptcy after spending more than $500 million in federal loan money.” Probably felt just like being back at the federal government, which is careening toward bankruptcy after spending more than $15 trillion in loan money . . .

Related: “Political connections can come back to bite you, when the politicians you were connected to need to gnaw through that connection and run like hell.”

UPDATE: Reader Tracy Cobbs emails:
Once again, real life mirrors Atlas Shrugged. Here’s a paragraph from Part 2, Chapter V, “Account Overdrawn”, describing a meeting of the Taggart Transcontinental Board of Directors:

“A man from Washington sat at the table among them. Nobody knew his exact job or title, but it was not necessary: they knew that he was the man from Washington.

His name was Mr. Weatherby, he had graying temples, a long, narrow face and a mouth that looked as if he had to stretch his facial muscles in order to keep it closed; this gave a suggestion of primness to a face that displayed nothing else. The Directors did not know whether he was present as the guest, the adviser or the ruler of the Board; they preferred not to find out.”
Message to the Obama Administration: Atlas Shrugged was meant as a cautionary tale, not a freaking how-to manual.

Heh: Gibson CEO Will Attend Obama's speech tonight: Says Federal Raid Will Cost Company $10 Million

That soft tyranny we live in via over-regulation? It's coalescing under Obama into a hard one: Feds Raid Gibson Guitars looking for Illegal Wood. It turned out later that the raid was likely due to Gibson not funding Obama in 2008. A classic shakedown. Note the update here via Instapundit:
MORE ON THE GIBSON RAID: “Why would the government use armed agents to attack one of the few major manufacturers of anything remaining in the United States?” It’s like they don’t want to see the economy recover or something.

UPDATE: What a coincidence! CEO of Gibson Guitar a Republican Donor. And their Democratic-donating competitor, Martin, uses the same wood but wasn’t raided. Well, when you’ve got a President who jokes about tax audits as revenge for a personal slight, it’s hard not to be suspicious, isn’t it?

That very same CEO will be in the audience tonight. From Gateway Pundit via memeorandum: GIBSON CEO WILL ATTEND OBAMA'S JOB SPEECH: Says Federal Raid Will Cost Company $10 Million
Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz told reporters today that the federal raid on the popular American guitar maker will cost the company $10,000,000. Juszkiewicz also said that he will attend Obama’s big spending jobs speech tomorrow in Washington DC.

Well, good: US House Probes Obama’s Connection to Failed Solar Company Solyndra’s Massive $535 Federal Loan

Just keep telling yourself that it's only $535 million, which is a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to the annual $1.5 trillion, or $1.5 million million just for comparisons sake, that Obama is overspending. Hopefully, something will actually come of this: Greenjobs-Gate: House Probes Obama’s Connection to Failed Solar Company Solyndra’s Massive Federal Loan
House investigators said they have uncovered evidence that White House officials became personally involved in an Energy Department review of a hot-button $535 million loan guarantee to the now-failed California solar company Solyndra.
And from a prior post of mine: Obama tours solar panel plant in CA to tout jobs, workers FORCED TO STAY HOME WITHOUT PAY! That was a year and a half ago, and BreitbartTV has the flashback:Flashback: Solyndra Workers Sent Home Without Pay for Obama’s Photo-Op Visit
When President Obama visited solar panel manufacturer Solyndra last year, the photo-op was supposed to show everything the Obama economic stimulus plan represented: Winning the future with high-tech "Green Jobs". Now, after the embarrassing $535 Million federal loan has vanished with Solyndra's bankruptcy, these photo-ops represent something quite different.

Predictable: Fast and Furious Scandal Coverup Follows Watergate Template

If Obama were a Republican, this would be him right now:
This an update from a couple months ago: Incompetent: Obama claims ignorance in ATF's "Project Gunrunner". Plus this one: Video Report: 43 Weapons in Phoenix Traffic Stop Linked to ATF's 'Fast and Furious'. Well, his is ignorant, and unqualified to hold the office of the President. But he's in their and claiming ignorance is not acceptable. At issue is "project gunrunner" where the US sold arms to Mexican thugs that turned around and shot our own border patrol agents who were themselves armed with... beanbags. Yes - beanbags: Video Report: Murdered US Border Patrol Agent from MI armed only with a bean bag, shot with guns Obama allowed drug cartel to purchase. A month ago I also posted this: Video of ATF Agent: "We Were Mandated, 'Let These Guns Go'. More here: ATF Director: Holder Obstructing ‘Fast and Furious’ Probe

"If his account is accurate, then ATF leadership appears to have been effectively muzzled while the DOJ sent over false denials and buried its head in the sand," Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said in a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Eric Holder. "That approach distorted the truth and obstructed our investigation."
The coverup is afoot, and quite familiar: Fast and Furious Follows Watergate Template
It wasn’t Watergate that brought down Richard Nixon; it was his ill-advised attempts to cover it up. Regarding the plan to undermine the Second Amendment by helping drug cartels smuggle American weapons into Mexico, Comrade Obama and the comparably odious Eric Holder have already committed themselves to provable lies. Every word they say now digs them deeper.
The media has simply been derelict in their choosing not to go after this story with the veracity that it deserves.

Irony: Detroit City Councilwoman and tax cheat who evaded property taxes by claiming non-existant tornado hit her house, blasts DTE for wind damage

Chalk this one up in the annals of political irony. JoAnn Watson is a property tax evader. (Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson To Get Away With Evading Property Taxes) Right after she started working for John Conyers, her property taxes dropped from around $5,000 to $68 as her property was reclassified as a vacant lot. She blames a tornado that somehow damaged her house (damage she never reported) but none of her neighbors. A fluke of nature? Nope. Just plain vanilla tax evasion. How is it that Watson spearheaded an effort to go after taxpayers who skirt their property taxes? How responsible is it to allow this tax cheat to have any say of Detroit's finances? What seemed common sense to me made the brain of Detroit voters short-circuit since they voted in the incompetent bob back into office. (she's not the only one either: New Detroit City Council Members Have Financial Problems, Debt, Tax Evasion Record) But the true irony is what Watson is doing with her time now- blasting DTE Energy for... wait for it... wind damage! From The Detroit Free Press, staffed with writers who have no sense for irony: Fiery windstorm that destroyed 70 houses in 2010 still under study
Nearly one year after a windstorm downed power lines and whipped up raging fires that destroyed dozens of structures in Detroit, the Michigan Public Service Commission is still investigating the causes and how Detroit Edison responded.

...On Dec. 1, the commission issued a report concluding that Detroit Edison wasn't negligent. But Isiogu said the state agency is still following up with DTE Energy, which is Detroit Edison's parent.

...Before closing the investigation, the three-person panel -- which oversees all utilities in the state -- could issue an order requiring that Detroit Edison make improvements. Or the commission could opt to not take any action.

...About 70 homes were destroyed or damaged when winds as high as 50 m.p.h. knocked down power lines and fanned fires all over the city.
So who comes to the proverbial rescue to the wind-damaged area? Why someone with experience in that area of course:
Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said the city's Law Department finally sent back a draft Thursday of a cost recovery ordinance that it began reviewing in February.

Watson wants the ordinance, proposed in October, passed so the city can charge DTE for the time firefighters spend guarding downed power lines while waiting for utility personnel. The ordinance, similar to others in the state, is meant to spur DTE to respond faster to reports of downed power lines or pay for the time firefighters spend at those scenes.

"We absolutely need to be doing that in the city of Detroit," Watson said, noting she was thrilled the Law Department sent it back Thursday. "I'm not letting it go."
Which is, again ironically, what she said about her own money when skirting the very property taxes that would have, in part, paid for those firefighters spending time guarding downed power lines, a bill she wants to stick to DTE. Anyone bring up her Wizard of Oz tornado at one of these council meetings where such issues are discussed? If not, anyone out there up for it?

Exit question: funny how liberals always want someone else to pony up money for services that are already supposed to be fully funded by tax dollars, no?

Shocker: GM, Chryler owner UAW leans toward Ford strike, "GM, Chrysler emerging as favorites to finish UAW contract talks first"

How exactly is this not racketeering? Obama gave the UAW a big chunk of ownership in GM and Chrysler at taxpayer expense, and now that same UAW is muscling GM and Chrysler competitor Ford Motor Company: UAW leans toward Ford strike
The United Auto Workers union has a strong mandate to strike Ford Motor Co. if an acceptable new labor agreement is not reached when the current contract expires Sept. 14.

Locals representing about 41,000 hourly Ford workers were asked to complete their votes by Friday. Locals are reporting 97 percent or higher of the membership has authorized UAW leadership to strike if necessary.

...Ford is the only Detroit automaker the UAW can strike. General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC have no-strike clauses from bankruptcy restructuring.
How could they strike GM and Chrysler anyway since they are part owners? Would the UAW strike against the UAW? Of course not. Ford is in essence getting punished for not putting themselves into Obama's, and the UAW's, hands.  Speaking of:
Bargaining with GM and Chrysler is pacing ahead of Ford, with teams working weekends and big issues on the table. The expectation is the larger GM will set terms that Chrysler will be expected to meet. Ford teams are working long days, but talks are not expected to intensify until after the Labor Day weekend.
So the UAW is essentially negotiating with itself via GM and Chrysler, and whatever they come up with will simply be imposed on Ford. Um - how is that not racketeering? Also, from The Detroit Free Press: GM, Chrysler emerging as favorites to finish UAW contract talks first. Shocked as hell, no?

Good News: 50+ government workers in MI collect jobless benefits while still on the job

Via The Detroit News: Genesee County: 50 get jobless benefits on the job. Genesee, huh? Read: Flint.
An audit by Genesee County officials has found that more than 50 government employees have collected about $30,000 in unemployment benefits while still on the job.

The Flint Journal reports Sunday that county officials are working through the cases to determine if the double-dipping was intentional. Ten cases could involve fraud of more than $1,000 and are being investigated by the sheriff's department.

The audit comes after the July arrest of seven county employees. They were suspended from their jobs indefinitely and charged with unemployment compensation fraud.

AFSCME Local 496 Chapter 01 Chairman Matt Spodney says he doesn't believe the 53 employees are part of his union. But he says it could be a case of poor communication with seasonal and other employees who didn't intend to commit fraud.
Yeah - those two checks they were getting at the same time raised no flags with them whatsoever.

Good Grief: Feds Raid Gibson Guitars looking for Illegal Wood

That soft tyranny we live in via over-regulation? It's coalescing under Obama into a hard one.Via Red State: DOJ Raids Gibson Guitars looking for Illegal Wood. They refuse to enforce our immigration laws, and sue states to do the opposite, but somehow have time for this:
Via press release from Gibson:
The Federal Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. has suggested that the use of wood from India that is not finished by Indian workers is illegal, not because of U.S. law, but because it is the Justice Department’s interpretation of a law in India. (If the same wood from the same tree was finished by Indian workers, the material would be legal.) This action was taken without the support and consent of the government in India.
Unbelievably enough, this was not the first time that the Gibson factories have been raided for this same reason.
In 2009, more than a dozen agents with automatic weapons invaded the Gibson factory in Nashville. The Government seized guitars and a substantial amount of ebony fingerboard blanks from Madagascar. To date, 1 year and 9 months later, criminal charges have NOT been filed, yet the Government still holds Gibson’s property. Gibson has obtained sworn statements and documents from the Madagascar government and these materials, which have been filed in federal court, show that the wood seized in 2009 was legally exported under Madagascar law and that no law has been violated. Gibson is attempting to have its property returned in a civil proceeding that is pending in federal court.
Again, Holder refuses to enforce our laws but has time to enforce laws from other countries? Good grief. Related: Gibson Guitar Corp. Responds to Federal Raid
Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp., has responded to the August 24 raid of Gibson facilities in Nashville and Memphis by the Federal Government. In a press release, Juszkiewicz said: "Gibson is innocent and will fight to protect its rights. Gibson has complied with foreign laws and believes it is innocent of ANY wrong doing. We will fight aggressively to prove our innocence."

UPDATE #2: More from the WSJ via memeorandumGuitar Frets: Environmental Enforcement Leaves Musicians in Fear. More from Hot Air, Proof Positive, Right Wing News, Michelle Malkin and Don Surber. Plus, more regulatory overreach to kill businesses: Team Obama Regulates Goat Herders' Workplaces
The Obama administration is setting new workplace regulations to assist foreign workers who fill goat herding positions in the U.S. , including employee-paid cell phones and comfy beds.

These new special procedures issued by the Labor Department must be followed by employers who want to hire temporary agricultural foreign workers to perform sheep herding or goat herding activities. It describes strict rules for sleeping quarters, lighting, food storage, bathing, laundry, cooking and new rules for the counters where food is prepared.

“A separate sleeping unit shall be provided for each person, except in a family arrangement,” says the rules signed by Jane Oates, assistant secretary for employment and training administration at the Labor Department.

“Such a unit shall include a comfortable bed, cot or bunk, with a clean mattress,” the rules state.

Diane Katz, a research fellow in regulatory policy at The Heritage Foundation, unearthed the policy in the "Federal Register," the massive daily journal of proposed regulations that Washington bureaucrats publish every day.

Under the Obama Administration, the nanny state has imposed 75 new major regulations with annual costs of $38 billion.

“This captures what is wrong with government,” Katz said. “I could not have made this up.”
Good grief...

UPDATE #3: Even more on Obama's War on Business: Regulators Gone Wild: Two lessons in how to kill an economy and ruin enterprise
Reason TV looks at the regulatory war being fought against residents of Antelope Valley, where the county of Los Angeles appears to be making a concerted effort to push residents out of their homes through harrassment — and armed raids:
The Antelope Valley is a vast patch of desert on the outskirts of Los Angeles County, and a segment of the few rugged individualists who live out there increasingly are finding themselves the targets of armed raids from local code enforcement agents, who’ve assembled into task forces called Nuisance Abatement Teams (NATs).

The plight of the Valley’s desert dwellers made regional headlines when county officials ordered the destruction of Phonehenge: a towering, colorful castle constructed out of telephone poles by retired phone technician Kim Fahey. Fahey was imprisoned and charged with several misdemeanors.

But Fahey is just one of many who’ve been targeted by the NATs, which were assembled at the request of County Supervisor Mike Antonovich in 2006. LA Weekly reporter Mars Melnicoff wrote an in-depth article in which she exposed the county’s tactic of badgering residents with minor, but costly, code violations until they face little choice but to vacate the land altogether.

“They’re picking on the the people who are the most defenseless and have the least resources,” says Melnicoff.

Reason.tv collaborated with Melnicoff to talk with some of the NAT’s targets, such as retired veteran Joey Gallo, who might face homelessness if he’s forced to leave his house, and local pastor Oscar Castaneda, who says he’s already given up the fight and is in the process of moving off the land he and his wife have lived on for 22 years. And, while Antonovich declined an interview, we did catch up with him at a public meeting in order to ask the big question at the center of all this: Why the sudden enforcement of these codes against people living in the middle of the desert, who seemingly are affecting no one?
If you had to destroy the US economy from the inside out, would you be doing anything different at this point than Obama?

UPDATE #4:Via Instapundit:

MORE ON THE GIBSON RAID: “Why would the government use armed agents to attack one of the few major manufacturers of anything remaining in the United States?” It’s like they don’t want to see the economy recover or something.

UPDATE: What a coincidence! CEO of Gibson Guitar a Republican Donor. And their Democratic-donating competitor, Martin, uses the same wood but wasn’t raided. Well, when you’ve got a President who jokes about tax audits as revenge for a personal slight, it’s hard not to be suspicious, isn’t it?

ANOTHER UPDATE: More here.

Nanny State: Cancer Patient Forbidden From Raising Money With Yard Sale On Own Property

There is no level of government too small for tyrants to mind your own business. After a rash of childrens' lemonade stands have been closed down by police across the country (Again? Police in GA shut down girls' lemonade stand), more regulatory idiocy and a further assault on property rights:
Other nanny state news over at drudge:

Nothing is out of reach of nanny state busy bodies. No matter how silly a decision (swings), or how personal (burying your kid), there's a bureaucrat waiting on the grassy knoll with a bullhorn to tell you what to do. I'll leave you all with this:
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. -C.S.
