Norman Taylor and Michael Goodwin are on a mission to boost enrollment at Detroit Public Schools — one child at a time.'Attendance agents" searching "house by house." Sure sounds benign enough, no? Certainly they wouldn't be putting pressure on any parents considering homeschool this fall to instead stuff their children into failed government schools, right? The crux of the argument for ending out the troops:
Searching house by house, the pair of Detroit Public Schools employees — once known as truancy officers and now known as attendance agents — often find boarded-up homes, families who have left the city or a house with no one home.
Getting more students to show up the first day would aid learning and boost the district's finances, since state school aid is based primarily on a fall enrollment count, DPS officials say. It's all about the money, not education. why not education? This is why from last May: Not one Detroit student scored 'advanced' in reading, 73% of 4th-graders below the 'basic' level, worst in the 40-year history of the test. Here is the one truth about Detroit Public Schools (DPS): they can't handle the truth. Back in January I had this: Question to Detroit School Board President: "What if every kid failed - should someone else step in?" Ans: "NO!" That's pretty much where they are at. That school board president, by the way, was a functional illiterate. This is yet another example of liberal Democrats (is there any other kind?) creating or saving government dependency. Detroit Public Schools (DPS) is the most inept district in the nation, graduating only 1-in-4 students. 25%. And those that make it through are not at all prepared for either college or career. Those not dropping out have such bad scores on national standardized tests that Michael Casserly, executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, had this to say:
"These numbers are only slightly better than what one would expect by chance as if the kids had never gone to school and simply guessed at the answers"So indeed getting thugs to pressure parents to stuff classrooms is all about money, not education since DPS apparently doesn't educate for a large swath of children in the D.
My suggestion for a long time on this blog has simply been to scrap it altogether. Yet others want to help by fixing the system. The teachers unions and the school board are opposed to any intervention, however. Their track records speak for themselves. Loudly. Not only are Detroit students failing in math, they are failing in reading as well.
Thus the question I have asked many times in this blog: why keep this corrupt, deficit-ridden, no value added system running at all? Just dismantle it with a stroke of the pen and give the kids a voucher to let them go to whatever school they want. Nope. Have to keep kids shackled to failed public schools to keep the victim class alive. Vouchers were a proven success in DC. Obama and his education secretary Arne Duncan were the architects that betrayed the children in Washington DC that was running a successful voucher program that proved to be both effective and cost only a quarter of what the public schools were taking in. Duncan and Obama had the data showing the success of the program before they decided to kill it off at the behest of the teacher unions. I have posted on that shameful act several times in this blog, such as these:
- It's official: Democrats kill successful DC voucher program, resegregate DC Public Schools
- After hiding the data and dumping the successful DC voucher program, the only thing Obama should tell students today is "I'm sorry"
